Arjun asked Lord Krishna to move their chariot to the middle of the two armies so that he can see the enemy face to face and appraise those who stand eager for the battle. Arjun said, though I can see everyone present, I have to choose the one with whom I would have one-on-one duel . Among the Kauravas' there are many vicious and wicked, overly pretending to be ready for the battle, yet the coward in them is least interested to engage in a battle. Conveying these words of Arjun to Dhrutrashtra Sanjay said:
आइका अर्जुन इतुकें बोलिला I तंव श्रीकृष्णें रथु पेलिला I दोहीं सैन्यांमाजीं केला I उभा तेणें II 174 II
जेथ भीष्मद्रोणादिक I जवळिकेचि सन्मुख I पृथिवीपति आणिक I बहुत आहाती II 175 II
तेथ स्थिर करुनियां रथु I अर्जुन असे पाहातु I तो दळभार समस्तु I संभ्रमेंसीं II 176 II
मग देवा म्हणे देख देख I हे गोत्रगुरु अशेख I तंव कृष्णमनीं नावेक I विस्मो जाहला II 177 II
तो आपणयां आपण म्हणे I एथ कायी कवण जाणे I हें मनीं धरिलें येणें I परी कांहीं आश्चर्य असे II 178 II
ऐसी पुढील से घेतु I तो सहज जाणे हृदयस्थु I परी उगा असे निवांतु I तिये वेळीं II 179 II

तैसें अर्जुना तेथ जाहलें I असतें पुरुषत्व गेलें I जें अंतःकरण दिधलें I कारुण्यासी II 189 II
देखा मंत्रज्ञ बरळु जाये I मग तेथ का जैसा संचारु होये I तैसा तो धनुर्धर महामोहें I आकळिला II 190 II
म्हणऊनि असता धीरु गेला I हृदया द्रावो आला I जैसा चंद्रकळा शिवतला I सोमकांतु II 191 II
तयापरी पार्थु I अतिस्नेहें मोहितु I मग सखेद असे बोलतु I श्रीअच्युतेंसीं II 192 II
Sanjay said, as the two armies were arrayed, ready for battle, Arjun requested Lord Krishna to place his chariot between them so that he might survey his opponents.
Lord Krishna drove Arjun's chariot into the middle of the two armies in the Kurukshetra battlefield. It stood close to that of Pitamah Bhishma, Guru Dron and other allies of Kauravas'. Arjun stood bewildered by the scene before him, for he beheld on both sides, fathers and grandfathers, teachers and uncles, fathers-in-law, grandsons, relatives and comrades. His confusion however didn't go unnoticed by Lord Krishna and could sense the emotional upheaval clouding Arjun's mind. Yet He stayed quiet. Arjun was overcome with compassion and sorrow when he saw his fathers-in-law, companions, and kinsmen standing in the ranks of the two armies. He could see many to whom he was a saviour and also those who owed him. Seeing his loved ones, near and dear ones everywhere on both sides sapped out his strength and he felt if it was the right thing going for this war. His valour left him having felt his compassion for his enemies insulting. Just like a beautiful noble woman can hardly tolerate another woman married to her husband or the amorous disposition compels man to be forgetful of his dutiful wife and instead seek the sexual gratification elsewhere or a man enriched by the merit of his tapas gets so engrossed in the enjoyment of those riches that he forgets about the tapas. Just like a wrong incantation boomerangs on the person exercising those charms, the attachment to his loved ones sapped Arjun of his strength and courage thus allowing the compassion to overpower his mind instead of throwing himself into the work in hand, the valour on the battlefield Kurukshetra.
Just like a Moonstone Gemstone (Chandrakant Mani) ceases to be solid when touched by moonbeams, Arjun moved to tears by his compassion turned to Lord Krishna and regretfully spoke his mind."
