"The four varṇas (occupational categories) are Brahmin (priestly class), Kshatriya (warrior and administrative class), Vaishya (mercantile and farming class), and Shudra (worker class). I have created them on the basis of "Guna" they possess and the subsequent Karma they do, said Lord Krishna to Arjun. "Guna" represents the inherent tendencies or desires of an individual, dictating their motivations and actions. "Karma" are the actions one takes and the subsequent consequences they experience, based on their intentions and motivations. The nature of one's actions (Karma) is heavily influenced by the dominant Guna (quality) present within them, which could be Sattva (goodness), Raja (passion), or Tama (inertia). The Four Varnas' are based on people's qualities and activities, not birth. At birth all are only humans. And therefore O' Brave Warrior Arjun said Lord Krishna, the Four Varnas' is not my making."
