"Dharma is a pillar for an individual's life which is fundamental for everyone. It is a primitive key to live one's life morally by being conscientiously correct when accomplishing one's duties.
All the entities present in the universe are supposed to behave according to their unique Swa-dharma to maintain the right balance and flow. Lord Krishna said to Arjun, doing one's duty as per his inner conscience is well illustrated by Swa-dharma. It is called as Nitya-Yadnya. Nitya means constant and Yadnya means selfless act of giving, serving, and sacrifice that benefits others.
Your virtue and your duty said Lord Krishna, lie in battle and not in abstention from battle; it is not slaughter, but non-slaying which would here be the sin. By not following one's Swa-dharma leads to accumulating the consequences of the bad karma that in turn leads to the unending cycle of death and rebirth. The worldly attachments rule the life we all live and most of the time we do not follow our Swa-dharma. We hence get caught in the self enforced trap of the consequences of our actions and so goes on the vicious circle. In this context let me draw your attention to another story."
